The needles are then gently manipulated by the practitioner's hands or with light electrical stimulation. Within the TCM system, acupuncture is understood to enhance or rebalance the flow of energy. It can increase overall energy levels, or "unblock" energy to reestablish proper circulation and restore health.
Where needles are placed and which treatment modalities are used is determined by which "pattern of disharmony" is noted by the practitioner. Studies have shown that acupuncture can cause the release of several naturally occurring substances in the body that can help reduce or eliminate pain, elevate the mood, reduce inflammation, and promote relaxation and circulation.

Chinese herbs are plant, animal or mineral substances used in specific combinations and dosages to treat disorders in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Each herb has its own medicinal qualities which are enhanced or reduced when used with other herbs.
Chinese herbs can help by replacing bodily substances that are deficient or by removing substances that are in excess. They also help by moving stagnant energy or blood away from an injury site or to an area where these are lacking. This rebalancing act can help help fight pain, diseases, or prevent disease in some cases.

Moxa Treatment

Established patients only - Moxibustion is a form of heat therapy. Dried plant materials called "moxa" are burned at a close proximity of the skin. This is done to warm and revitalize the flow of Qi in the body to dispel certain pathogenic influences.
(Duration: 30 minutes)

Cupping Treatment

Cupping is a form of alternative medicine in which a therapist puts specially designed cups on your skin for a few minutes to create suction on that area of your body to help with pain, inflammation, blood flow, and relaxation.

Facial Acupuncture

Facial acupuncture uses the traditional Chinese medicinal technique of placing fine needles in specific points in the face, improving the flow of energy (also called chi or qi) to reduce signs of aging.

Until 150 years ago, acupuncture, moxibustion, and herbology were the main medical therapies used in Japan. Hide (pronounced “Hee-day”) was born into one of the oldest acupuncture families in Japan. He grew up watching and helping his mother in her acupuncture clinic as she treated thousands of people with a wide range of conditions. Here he experienced firsthand the powerful benefits of Oriental Medicine. The deep level of respect and appreciation the patients displayed for his mother’s skills, and her ability to help people heal, made a profound impact on Hide - it was a natural choice for him to attend acupuncture college after high school.

Hide attended Osaka Acupuncture College in Japan, becoming a 6th generation acupuncturist. He later came to the United States, where he attended the San Francisco College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. He is licensed in the U.S., as well as in Japan.

Hide opened the first Holistic Health Center clinic in 1989. Hide specializes in energy balancing to promote the body’s own healing energy. He enjoys meeting new people and educating them about the benefits of Traditional Oriental Medicine. Hide is an avid surfer who restores his own healing energy in the ocean waves. Hide also holds a 5th degree black belt, and teaches karate in San Mateo. He believes his karate practice helps him to develop his strength and focus. Hide speaks English and Japanese.

Rei’s Specialty is Shiatsu style massage.

Shiatsu is a form of massage that originated in Japan. It is usually performed through loose clothing and without lotions or oils. Healthcare professionals view shiatsu as a modified form of acupressure, a massage therapy that combines both pressure and stretches to the meridians and individual points on the body. This affects the circulatory and lymphatic systems by assisting the body in releasing toxins and reducing tension and fatigue by improving blood and lymphatic circulation.

Like acupuncture, shiatsu has its roots in the concept of Qi (pronounced “chee”). Deficient or blocked qi causes symptoms such as body pain, headaches, and digestive issues. In traditional Chinese medicine, qi is the vital life force that drives all life activity. Proper qi circulation along the meridians creates harmonious movement and balance throughout the body.
